Day 2, Sunday, 6-28-09 Walsenburg, CO to Ordway, CO
79 miles.

Before leaving Walsenburg, I stopped in at the local Safeway and picked up 2 quarts of powerade. I was concerned about the lack of services on hwy. 10 heading east and 167 north to Fowler. Not much out that way but wide open space.
It was a hot one. It felt great to be on the way.
Very little traffic. I mostly had the road to myself. Passed by several small groups of antelope.
On 167 north off of 10, horned toads started to appear along the road. Exotic looking creatures. Almost all had been flattened.
A few miles south of Fowler saw a baby antelope. It looked ridiculous. The creatures back legs resembled gigantic qtips. Made it to Fowler with half a quart of powerade left. Nice.
Pedalled past two prisons on the way to Ordway. I forgot to mention that Robert Schulz in Walsenburg lives right across from a prison. It's lights burned all night long outside of my bedroom window. Prison theme so far on the ride.
Ordway - Lodging with Gillian Hoggard from New Zealand. Gillian hosts cyclists that come through Ordway. I was lucky to be the only one on sunday. Gillian kept me entertained with adventure stories from her life. She has travelled all over the world, has many years of sailing experience, and has lived for 10 years on a sailboat. I was impressed. Cyclists passing through Ordway look up Gillian Hoggard.

Day 1 - June 27, 2009
Alamosa to Walsenburg
Twenty-six riders met me at the south end of Cole Park in Alamosa to start the Heartland 2009 ride. Several riders started out ahead of time: Bill Brinton and Kris Steinberg on their tandem and Amanda Pearson on her recumbant. Everything came together wonderfully, weather, rest breaks, no major mechanical difficulties. Special thanks to Audrey Liu, Sam Wisener, Marci Lierly, and Rick Dunnahoo for all of their hard work in organizing the ride. I met Michelle Le Blanc at race break one. Michelle has been an important piece of bringing the Heartland ride together and has arranged lodging with her parents in Hildreth, Nebraska on the Heartland route to Minnesota. I was happy to catch up with Lance Cheslock and Bob Linden and we made it to the top of La Veta Pass together. On the downhill side, I was very pleased to see two bikers with one bike who turned out to be my neighbors and friends Kris Steinberg and Bill Brinton. Fun lunch at La Veta Inn. Thanks to everyone who joined me on the send-off ride! Alone in La Veta I wandered around and discovered the Book Nook, used books for sale from friends of the library. Not a good combination for the beginning of my bike tour, but I could not help myself. I bought enough to fill a medium sized box and made an arrangement to have them taken to almosa.
On to Walsenburg. I felt a little lonely after the excitement and comradery of the group send-off.

I met up with my host for the night,Robert Schulz and had a very tasty mexican meal in Walsenburg. Thanks for the first nights lodging, Robert.

Hi Tim: It seems like you are enjoying your annual bike ride with such a passion. Hope the remainder of the miles are safe and marked with pleasant weather. I was just in Brooklyn visiting a family member. It's amazing that you rode from NY to the starting place. Hope you like NY. Take care. Dr. Becca

Way to go Tim! You are amazing. Remember me from the Habitat 500. The tall one with the 50lb hybrid bike. Was not able to ride this year, but am planning on being there next year for my 10th ride.
Just found out about your blog from Steve Reis today. What an adventure! I would have contributed to your cause had I known earlier.
Take care and ride well this week.
Blessings and may the wind be at your back.

Sounds like tons of fun Tim! Just wait until someone says "Don'tcha know". Try and check out a restaurant called Boca Chica in South St. Paul. Not the same kind of Mexican food in the SW but it's pretty good and the margaritas are to die for! If you can't get to South St. Paul try The Newsroom in downtown Minneapolis. Good atmosphere and lots of fun.

Since food is such a recurring theme for you, I thought you might appreciate this. Ruth came over for dinner on July 4th. Fitting it being Tuesday and all. She was pooped from travelling around to family events with Jesse, and did not eat all day in anticipation of our invitation. I am currently rebelling against vegetarianism and reclaiming meat. In celebration I grilled a chicken for me and Ruth. It was yummy. That little 91 year-old ate FOUR PIECES! It was a sight to watch. We also had pesto, orzo salad, tabouleh, and grilled vegetables and dessert. It was a great meal. I tucked the few remaining pieces of chicken in a little container in the fridge for leftovers. Yum.

Then the next day Joel left at sunrise to go on a camping trip. With all of those plastic containers of leftover salads in the fridge, what did he take? My chicken! I've been cursing him ever since. I'll be even more pissed if I find out he realized his mistake and then didn't EAT it! Love, Vivie and the gang. Hope all is well.

Greetings Tim!
I've made it through a maze of obstacles, here I am at Southern Peaks Library. It is busy today and people are getting bumped from computers to make way for other people who are waiting. Recent highlights of life in Alamosa include the Saturday morning KRZA yard sale. While "shopping" (other words could be used) I overheard someone ask Kate for your contact information and she gave this web address. You missed the annual fourth of July parade, some would say that you didn't miss much, but I always enjoy the event. The Red Hat Society had a float this year, and KRZA marched by passing out orange balloons. The clash of red and orange was separated by tractors, horses, and children passing out candy. Fireworks at the Rodeo Fair Grounds were spectacular, I sat with Miles at the top of the grandstand, ooohhhing and aaahhhing. And you will be glad to know that life goes on at La Puente. I have a hard time getting over there very often because of my schedule, but I made it today. Enjoyed lunch and conversation outside at the picnic tables under the elm trees. Summers in Alamosa are much too short. The mammoth addition to the shelter becomes more refined each day. I'm amazed -- I always "see" (remember) the 1981 building and the history of growth and change.

Since I haven't yet been bumped off this computer I'll submit this note and go back to reading your recent log notes. That is so cool you had riding companions on the Fourth of July. Heard your voice on KRZA this morning. Sending you cool breezes from Alamosa!

Greetings Tim,

At last, I have found a computer that will consider speaking to you! Last week, after receiving your note, I had the "brillant" idea that I would write to you from Milagros coffee house. Turns out their computers don't have flash either, now I'm at Southern Peaks library. I mention this as you may have other loyal fans who have older computers(like mine)trying to follow your adventure story, but unable to access because they don't have flash.

Welcome to Minot! I have very fond memories of North Dakota. In May of 2002, when I was chronically depressed, my former history teacher, "Dad" Morgan, now living in Washburn, North Dakota perscribed an anti-depresent. I received an all expenses paid trip from Denver to Bismarc for a weeklong adventure, and historical fieldtrip. The Lewis & Clark Interpretation Center, Custer's Home, and The Lewis & Clark Saloon were but a few of the highlights. In South Dakota, we stopped at the sacred mountain, Bear Butte. "Dad" credits that mountain for helping redirect the negative forces in my life at that time.

Ann and Dale from Denver brought the Dances of Universal Peace to Alamosa last Sunday. At the potluck afterward both Jan Oen and Vivia mentioned reading your blog and hearing your reports on KRZA. The snap of your derailer was a memorable story that
got repeated. Kate has been airing your stories regularly although sometimes we hear several
in a row broadcast on the same day.

And before I forget, Miles says to send a "hello."

I hope your day off the bike in Minot is MISQUITOE FREE! ! !

I'm going to take a deep breath now and hit the submit button and hope that this computer really does understand the difference between "submit" and "delete." You know, there are some that don't.

Sending you endless good energy from Alamosa. It's all downhill from here.

Hi Tim,

I can't believe how you find the energy to write after 94 miles, or on any other day, for that matter. I'm loving your entries. We miss you, and are so proud of you. V

Greetings Tim,

This is Mary Van Pelt writing from Mile Eddy's computer because my older computer doesn't have flash and won't let me access your blog. Miles says to be sure and send you his greetings as well.

Your trip is an inspiration, your endurance and physical stamina, the genorosity expressed by the people you meet, the interesting sights and experiences along the way . . . and much more. I've always been a picture postcard writer when I travel, but I've never attempted computer communication on the road. This is a most impressive thing. I can't imagine how you figured out sending the King Kong poster -- but I'm a product of the 1950s. On ocassion I still miss my manual typewriter.

Your doing a wonderful thing, not only fund raising for Habitat --but keeping up this most amazing and informative webpage.

Thanks! Sending you endless good energy from Alamosa.

Hey Steve,
I can't take credit for the helicopter photo, but I did post the pic of the bicycle tire (found it on flickr). I figured it was good for a chuckle... Your helicopter sounds amazing. Can't wait to see the actual photos. peace, Thomas Locke (New York, NY)

Good job by someone, that picture wasn't our helicopter, wrong color and doors on it, but otherwise exact. Good job finding it when my computer would not download from tim's camera.

But that pink bike with the flat tire, no way! I helped tim air up Tim's tires and they sure were not white wall.

Enjoy Montana, its a big place.

I'm enjoying the website with all the info of the area you are riding through and am wishing you well. Enjoy the scenery it sounds wonderful!

Persevere?

Let's see what some great minds think about that.

"Persevere and get it done."
--George Allen

"Aim at perfection in everything, though in most things it is unattainable. However, they who aim at it, and persevere, will come much nearer to it than those whose laziness and despondency make them give it up as unattainable."
--Lord Chesterfield

"Follow your dreams, work hard, practice and persevere. Make sure you eat a variety of foods, get plenty of exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle."
--Sasha Cohen

I'd say you got that perseverence thing down. Especially in the food and exercise department.

Today, I was handed a single check from a friend for $500 made out to SLV Habitat for Humanity. With corporate matching, it will be $1,000. That brings total fundraising from New York to over $6,000.
